MULLIN AUTOMOTIVE MUSEUM APPOINTS DEPUTY DIRECTOR AND CHIEF CURATOR ANDREW REILLY
Key Hire Brings Integrated Knowledge of Art and Automobiles to New Southern California Collection
The Mullin Automotive Museum, a facility that will pay homage to the art deco and machine age design eras with exquisite art and magnificent automobiles, announced today the appointment of Andrew Reilly as Deputy Director and Chief Curator, just ahead of the museum’s grand opening on April 15. Reilly brings to his new position a wealth of knowledge and experience in both decorative arts and automobiles.
“I am honored, excited, and humbled by the opportunity to work with Mr. Mullin and his remarkable collections,” said Reilly. “Our mission, as I see it, is to engage the public in a more fertile way and to explain the relevance of these 60-100-year-old objects to the present day. What the museum will illustrate is the interplay between automobiles and the fine art movements of the art deco era.”
Like Mullin, Reilly believes in the necessity of sharing these pieces outside the confines of the museum, as a way to keep the collections in the public consciousness. But crucial to the at-home efforts, will be Reilly’s curatorial responsibilities as preservationist, manager and teacher, host to international dignitaries as well as local car club and school groups, special exhibitions and elegantly staged private events.
A lifetime of exposure to collector’s motorcars and fine art has allowed Reilly to expand on his advanced education in history, art history, design and architecture, with work experience at Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (Department of American Decorative Arts) and four internationally respected auction houses; Gooding & Company, Bonhams & Butterfields, Christie’s and Skinner. It would be difficult to imagine an individual with a background better focused on Peter Mullin’s vision for his museum.
As the Museum Foundation grows and refines its collections, Reilly’s qualifications as an appraiser and his long established network of galleries and collections will be another valuable asset. Growing up the son of an historian and a car dealer and collector, Reilly has spent his entire life attending museum exhibitions, car races and Concours surrounded by car enthusiasts and their machines. This upbringing and education fostered his passion for the history of art and design, and their synergies with the automobile through the 20th Century.
Reilly’s time spent living and working in Europe and fluency in multiple languages will be an advantage as the Mullin Automotive Museum establishes its place in the galaxy of the world’s great museums. Additionally, he has experience in a number of television and cable programs, as well established relationships with an international cadre of broadcast, print and on-line journalists also will help assure the museum’s visibility.
Reilly will make the museum available for guided instructional tours by appointment.
