Delaware Art Museum presents A Belief in the Power of Beauty: A Selection of Works by May Morris

The Delaware Art Museum presents A Belief in the Power of Beauty: A Selection of Works by May Morris, on view August 28, 2010 – January 2, 2011.

This exhibition will present a selection of May Morris’ work, including landscape watercolors, embroidery, and book arts, celebrating the creativity of this next generation of handcraft.

The approximately 25 works of art in the show will be drawn from the Delaware Art Museum’s collection and various other public and private collections, with many of the works rarely on view to the public. While May Morris’ creative debt to her father William Morris goes without question, it reveals an individuality which might be better understood as a carrying forward and modernization of many of his principles.

For much of her life, the artistic output of May Morris, daughter of Arts and Crafts pioneer William Morris, was lost in the shadow of her famous father. This exhibition will examine a collection of watercolor paintings as well as a selection of other media in which her artistic talents flourished.
