September 6, 2010 – 2:11 pmNo Comment

On Sunday, September 12, 2010 from 12 Noon to 5 PM the Military Transport Association of North Jersey (MTA) will display a wide variety of classic, restored U.S. Military vehicles on the Great Lawn of Whippany Station at The Whippany Railway Museum.

The MTA will display its operating, 1941-vintage Plymouth Industrial Switching Locomotive, which was used for 57 years at the Army Storage Depot in Somerset, NJ. This unique little locomotive will give operating demonstrations throughout the day in the Whippany Yard.

Visitors will also see restored Vintage Locomotives and Railcars at the Museum site, including the largest collection of American-built Steam Locomotives on display in New Jersey. Steam Locomotive No. 4039 was built in 1942 by the American Locomotive Company for U.S. Army World War II serivce. Steam Locomotive No. 385, the oldest of the group at nearly 102 years old was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1907 as a fast-freight engine for the Southern Railway. ‘Fireless Cooker’ Steam Locomotive No. 7240 is now restored. This unusual locomotive was built by Porter in 1937 for industrial work at a Texaco refinery.

This event will be run in conjunction with the Museum’s regularly-scheduled Caboose Train Rides that will operate on the same day. Visitors can climb aboard an authentic, restored Caboose and enjoy a relaxing trip back to a simpler era. The excursion ride is a 10-mile, 45-minute round trip.
