Entwined Histories: The Maisie Hurley Collection at the North Vancouver Museum

The exhibition on view in Presentation House at the North Vancouver Museum, January 23, 2011 – August, 2011, examines the entwined histories of native and non-native activists in British Columbia through the lens of one individual (Maisie Hurley, 1887-1962)) and one First Nation community (the Squamish Nation).

Although a non-native, Mrs. Hurley was a strong advocate for native rights, the first woman admitted to the Native Brotherhood of BC, and founder and editor of the “Native Voice” newspaper. She received many gifts from native leaders in recognition of her advocacy work. These gifts, representing diverse aboriginal communities, form the basis of the Museum’s “Maisie Hurley Collection”.

The exhibition is a collaborative project between the Museum and the Squamish Nation Education Department.
