Nationalmuseum Gripsholm Castle opens for the season

“Rarefied Light,” an annual juried exhibition sponsored by the AlaskaPhotographicCenter, showcases the best of Alaska’s fine art photography. On view through through Oct. 31 2010. at the AnchorageMuseum.

“Rarefied Light” is the largest juried photography exhibition in the state. In this year’s competition more than 470 photographs were submitted by 72 Alaska artists: Fifty images were selected for the exhibition. Best of Show was awarded to both Maggie Skiba of EagleRiver for “Prodigal Daughter” and Ward Hulbert of Anchorage for “Fire Eyes.”

Honorable mentions were awarded to Brian Adams, “Ardith of Shishmaref;” Jay Barrett, “Rotary Vista Rainbow, Kodiak;” Brian Beckwith, “Dream Hike;” Bob Hallinen, “Quonset;” Gary Postlethwait, “Waiting;” Ryan Romer, untitled; and Kevin G. Smith, “Akiak Annie.”

This year’s juror was Keith Carter, a fine art photographer from Beaumont, Texas, and the recipient of the 2009 Texas Medal of Arts. “The submissions to ‘Rarefied Light’ represent photography’s continued evolvement and passion for life on our small, elegant planet,” Carter wrote in his juror’s statement.

After the exhibition closes, it will travel across Alaska: Dec. 3-30, AlaskaCentennialCenter for the Arts, Fairbanks; Jan. 11-Feb. 4, Kenai Peninsula College, Kenai; Feb. 11-March 9, Kodiak College Campus Center, Kodiak; March 25-April 30, Alaska State Museum, Juneau.

This exhibition is funded in part by a grant from the Alaska State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
