Guggenheim Museum Bilbao Opens The Golden Age of Dutch and Flemish Painting from the Stadel Museum

The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao presents The Golden Age of Dutch and Flemish Painting from the Städel Museum, open 7th October 2010 to 23rd January 2011, a magnificent selection of 130 master works from the Städel Museum in Frankfurt.

This highly regarded institution in Europe boasts a unique collection of what was known as The Golden Age of Dutch and Flemish painting from the 17th century, when the Netherlands led the world of art, of science, and of trade.

Made possible through support from the BBVA Foundation, the exhibitions covers the Museum’s third floor, offering visitors an extensive selection of Dutch paintings, enriched by significant Flemish works of the period, in a theme-based route through five main sections, corresponding to the major painting genres that artists of this period specialized in: History and Allegory, Portrait, Genre and Interior Scenes, Landscape, and Still Life, displaying the tastes of the Dutch elite.

Curated by Jochen Sander, Deputy Director and Head of German, Dutch, and Flemish painting of the Städel Museum, the exhibition includes master works by over 80 artists, including the most important painters from this period: Jan Vermeer, Rembrandt, Frans Hals, Peter Paul Rubens, the Brueghels, Jordaens and Teniers, Gerard ter Borch, Jan Steen, Jan van Goyen, Cornelis de Heem, Karel van Mander, Dirck van Baburen, Abraham Mignon or Adriaen Brouwer, among others.

The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, designed by North American architect Frank O. Gehry, is a magnificent example of the most groundbreaking architecture to have come out of the 20th century. The building itself is an innovatively designed architectural landmark that creates a seductive backdrop for the exhibition of contemporary art.
