Nancy Spero (1926-2009) was an actress and mover of history, who stood alongside Louise Bourgeois as a figure of 20th century American art. For her “the brush was mightier than the pen” in her fierce opposition to America’s involvement in the Vietnam in the 1960′s. Fascinated by the work of Antonin Artaud, she later dedicated herself to representing and defending the “second sex”. Here the Centre Pompidou is putting on a retrospective of her work featuring her monumental masterpiece Azur (courtesy of the Centre Pompidou Foundation).
