Museum of Somerset to Open in 2011

The Museum of Somerset plans to open in 2011.

The Museum of Somerset is a project to conserve and restore Taunton Castle and to rejuvenate the Somerset County Museum which is located within it. Heritage Lottery funding has been confirmed and contractors are currently on site renovating the Castle buildings, including the installation of lifts to provide vastly improved access for people with disabilities.

Plans include the opening up of more space within the Castle to the public, as well as the creation of a new learning space and better visitor facilities, including a new café.

For Somerset people, the museum will be a place that reflects their heritage, voices their concerns and celebrates their achievements. For visitors to the county, the museum will act as an introduction and inspiration by telling them what is distinctive about Somerset, explaining how the county evolved and providing information and encouragement to explore the county further.
