Riverside Art Museum Presents John Divola Present Tense
The Riverside Art Museum presents John Divola: Present Tense exhibition on view through April 2, 2011.
Since the early 1970s, John Divola has been critically lauded for spawning a uniquely influential body of work that have pushed the limits of photography as a medium, at times using it purely as a way to arrive at a different understanding of his practice altogether. Primarily using the greater Los Angeles area as his baseline, Divola’s earliest works can be described as artistic interventions in the most ordinary of places, from the quiet of the suburbs to the immediate outskirts of the metropolis – a working practice he continues to follow to this day. At once melding the disciplines of sculpture, painting, and performance art –and using photography to document the resulting experience- Divola’s work is at once a deadpan depiction of the geography around him as it is a document of the aesthetic possibilities subliminally present around us.
John Divola has recently been in group exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, Princeton University Art Museum, Kunsthalle Bern, and more, as well as a solo exhibition, Sundown, at Office Baroque Gallery in Antwerp, Belgium. A large mid-career exhibition of his work will be shown at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and Santa Barbara Museum of Art in 2013.

John Divola, an art/photography professor at UCR, is the recipient of numerous National Endowments for the Arts Fellowships, a Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship, a California Arts Council Individual Artist Grant, and other awards. His work has been exhibited at MoMA, New York; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; LACMA, Los Angeles, and in fine art museums around the world.
