Wave Hill Exhibition Underscores the Influences of Nature in New Works by Philip Taaffe, Fred Tomaselli, Terry Winters

February 24, 2011 – 10:45 amNo Comment

Bronx, NY, – Philip Taaffe, Fred Tomaselli and Terry Winters exhibit together for the first time in Wave Hill’s spring show Alchemy & Inquiry, organized by independent curator Raymond Foye and Wave Hill Senior Curator Jennifer McGregor. While each of the three artists maintains his distinctive approach to materiality and process, they share a common practice of producing works that are rooted in the ways they each study, observe, engage with and revere nature. Taaffe, Tomaselli and Winters respond to Wave Hill’s landscape, exploring new tangents to create new works of art. A public garden and cultural center in the Bronx overlooking the Hudson River and Palisades, Wave Hill’s mission is to explore human connections with the natural world. Its Glyndor Gallery, situated on a southern slope of the gardens, is a focus for creative energy.

Taaffe’s paintings are inspired by the epiphytes, or air plants, found in Wave Hill’s Conservatory. Plants and botanicals are a significant source for Taaffe, who will have a 10-year survey of his work at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin this spring. Tomaselli exhibits new paintings and photograms using plant material collected from his own garden and inspired by birds at Wave Hill and elsewhere along the Hudson. A traveling retrospective of his work was on view at the Brooklyn Museum last fall. Winters’ paintings explore the relationship between biological systems and design principles, as inspired by Wave Hill’s gardens and woodlands. His work inaugurated the recently renovated Böhm Chapel in Huerth, outside of Cologne, Germany.

Alchemy & Inquiry offers an opportunity to observe and understand these artists’ engagement with nature, in a setting that encourages visitors to experience the surrounding landscape in very personal, creative ways. A catalogue accompanies the exhibition, which travels to James Cohan Gallery in Shanghai next fall.
