National Museum of Nuclear Science & History Presents Yesterday’s Tomorrows Past Visions of the American Future
The National Museum of Nuclear Science & History presents “Yesterday’s Tomorrows: Past Visions of the American Future”. Exhibition on view through May 1, 2011.
What do we think the future holds? That perennial question is addressed in a special exhibition, at National Museum of Nuclear Science & History, which explores the history of the future as well as the expectations and beliefs about things to come.
Visitors to the Museum will have the opportunity to make their own predictions of the future, and what it may hold in the areas of Transportation, the Environment and Natural Resources, and Architecture and City Planning.
“Humans have always imagined the future,” said Jim Walther, Director of the Museum. “This exhibit explores some of ways that’s been done in the last few decades – and invites us all to share our thoughts and ideas.”
“Yesterday’s Tomorrows” focuses on popular culture and technology as seen in toys, books, movie stills, car designs, advertisements and models of architectural designs to examine the ways in which Americans of the late 19th and 20th centuries have envisioned the future. The exhibition concentrates on the past one hundred years in America, when visions of the future fluctuated between secular utopias characterized by amazing leaps of science and technology and urban chaos saturated with danger and disintegration.
“Yesterday’s Tomorrows: Past Visions of the American Future” was developed by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES) and is an adaptation of an exhibition originally produced in cooperation with the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History.
There is no additional cost to see the exhibit; it is included with regular admission to the Museum. The cost of admission is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors and youth.
