The exhibition, on view through 2nd May in the Belfast Room at the Ulster Museum, features 14 large-scale panoramic views of Ulster taken from a new book entitled, The Natural History of Ulster, which features the work of leading Natural History photographer, Robert Thompson from County Armagh.

Dr Peter Crowther, Head of Natural Sciences at National Museums Northern Ireland said: “This exhibition provides us with a unique view of Ulster’s beautiful coast and countryside as the majority of photographs were taken from the air. The photographs are a celebration of the landscape and its role in shaping the history of Ulster and influencing our scientific and literary traditions.”

A photographer for over twenty years, Robert Thompson has explored Ireland’s hidden beauty spots and travelled extensively in Europe in search of beautiful images of nature. An active conservationist, Robert lectures on various natural history topics and photography. His passion for photography and nature has also led him to conduct photographic tours and workshops.

The Natural History of Ulster book co-edited by John Faulkner and Robert Thompson has been funded by Northern Ireland Environment Agency, National Parks and Wildlife Service and The Heritage Council. The book is being published by National Museums Northern Ireland and will be launched by the poet Michael Longley, on Wednesday 6th April.
