James A. Michener Art Museum Announces A Celebration of Pennsylvania Folk Arts

May 13, 2011 – 4:40 pmNo Comment

Join the James A. Michener Art Museum in celebrating the “Making it Better: Folk Arts in Pennsylvania Today” artwork with artists’ demonstrations, gallery tours and performances on Sunday, June 12, 1 to 5 pm.

“Making it Better: Pennsylvania Folk Arts Today” is a state-wide traveling exhibition that tells the stories of over 30 master artists whose work can heal the sick, challenge social inequity, assist in meditation, and help communities both grieve and celebrate. Coming from every corner of Pennsylvania, the art represents a wide array of traditions such as African dance, stone wall construction, Native American clay flutes, Pysanky eggs, contemporary blacksmith work, woodcarving, and Vietnamese funerary portraits. All are integrated into people’s lives and important enough to be shared and passed on.

This exhibit demonstrates that although many traditional arts are rooted in centuries-old practices, they are thriving and meeting the needs of communities today.

The following exhibiting artists will offer demonstrations of their work:

Chamroeun Yin, a Cambodian dancer and costume maker,Vera Nakonechny, a Ukrainian embroider, weaver and beadworker, and Frito Bastien, a Haitian painter. There will also be a gallery tour led by Amy Skillman, exhibition curator. This event is free with admission.

Free with museum admission
