Grand Prix comes to the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum (CBMM) on November 13

The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum (CBMM) in St. Michaels, MD is hosting the inaugural James L. Stewart Memorial St. Michaels Grand Prix on Sunday, November 13, from 12noon to 4pm.

Come watch and join in as local residents and businesses compete in a race to unload their cargo of food and beer from golf carts. The event memorializes the life of James L. Stewart, known by many before his 2010 passing as the “mayor of St. Michaels.” Proceeds from all cart sales during the event benefit the American Diabetes Foundation.

The James L. Stewart Memorial St. Michaels Grand Prix takes place on Sunday, November 13 at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michaels, MD and honors the life of James L. Stewart, shown here, who passed away in August of 2010. Proceeds benefit the American Diabetes Foundation.

“James was loved by so many,” commented event organizer and St. Michaels restaurateur Chris Agharabi. “We wanted to celebrate his life in a fun and meaningful way, while drawing locals out for a great day of fun at the museum. Carts will be decorated, drivers will be swapped at pit stops, and the bribing of race officials— if it means raising more money, might even be encouraged.” Early cart participants include Ava’s Pizzeria & Wine Bar, Foxy’s Harbor Grille, Kelly Distributors, Carpenter Street Saloon, and Bliss Jewelry & Gifts, with more carts available.

James L. Stewart lived in St. Michaels for 17 years. He was involved in Chesapeake Community College’s theater, Fall into St. Michaels, Christmas in St. Michaels, and helped to decorate historic properties for house tours. He worked behind the bar at Ava’s Pizzeria before passing away from diabetes complications in August 2010.

The event is free with general museum admission of $13 for adults, $10 for seniors, $6 for children ages 6-17, and free for CBMM members and children under six. Each person bringing a canned food donation for a local food bank will receive $3 off admission. To register a cart for the event, call 410-745-8009.
