ST. LOUIS – The Missouri Civil War Museum (MCWM) organization was awarded a $150,000 grant by St. Louis County Port Authority from its Community Reinvestment Fund. The grant will be used to assist with the restoration of the historic 1918 Jefferson Barracks Post Exchange Building that will be the home of the MCWM’s library, the Missouri Civil War Studies Center (MCWSC).
The MCWSC will be a 6,000 square-foot research library that will serve as an educational resource for students, scholars, and the general public across the St. Louis metropolitan area, the state, and the nation. It will create an integrated learning experience with the MCWM located beside it.
The grant funds will be used for some initial interior restoration work as well as to repair the roof and install new windows and doors. The library is projected to open 12-18 months after the museum opens.
The MCWM has established a signifcant collection of material that is ready for the MCWSC. The collection includes thousands of books, magazines, photographs, documents, military records, and microfilm and microfiche.
“We are very appreciative of the support and confidence from the St. Louis County Economic Council and St. Louis County Port Authority,” said Mark Trout, chairman of the MCWM. “The opening of the MCWSC will complement the museum as well as the Jefferson Barracks Historic Site by providing a unique, exciting, and comprehensive Civil War educational experience for students, tourists, and the public.”
“St. Louis County is committed to reinvesting funds aimed at creating new jobs, enhancing services and redevelopment opportunities and is pleased to be able to preserve this important piece of Missouri history,” said St. Louis County Executive Charlie A. Dooley.
