A selection of around 60 drawings and 24 large-format lithographs of plants by the 88-year-old American Ellsworth Kelly, covers every decade of his work since the 6-years he spent in France from 1948-54. A rich graphic oeuvre, in which direct observations from nature formed the primary starting point, resulted from this early period. Kelly’s examination of what has been a classical subject for centuries in the visual arts, plant drawing, also belongs to this context. Kelly himself later described his early plant drawings as the point of departure for all of his later works. A comprehensive catalogue is being published to accompany this exhibition that will run parallel to the Kelly retrospective in the Haus der Kunst.
The exhibition has been made possible thanks to Merck & Finck.
