Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum Announces First E-Book

The Guggenheim becomes the first museum to release an exhibition catalogue e-book. As part of the museum’s foray into digital publishing, Guggenheim Publications is not only releasing new e-book titles such as the Cattelan catalogue but also making available historic out-of-print titles for online browsing and publishing digital versions of reprinted titles, including I’d Like the Goo-Gen-Heim, a timeless introduction to modern art for young readers.

With more than 160 full-color images and 27 black and white drawings, Maurizio Cattelan: All is the first e-book of an artist monograph published by the Guggenheim, providing comprehensive information on Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan’s witty, provocative, and unsettling artworks in full color on tablets and e-readers.

Published to coincide with the Guggenheim’s Cattelan retrospective, on view until January 22, 2012, Maurizio Cattelan: All includes a critical overview by exhibition curator Nancy Spector and reproduces nearly every work created by Cattelan from the late 1980s to the present. The volume addresses the recurring themes in Cattelan’s art, documents his ongoing activities as a publisher and writer, and provides a detailed exhibition history and bibliography.

The digital edition of the catalogue beautifully incorporates the design of the printed book while giving connoisseurs, students, and scholars all the tools and flexibility that e-books offer, including the ability to search the full text and citations, bookmark pages, enlarge images, and annotate articles and photos. Distributed by Artbook | D.A.P., the digital edition is now available for the iPad, Kindle, and Kobo and will soon be available on all other e-readers.

I’d Like the Goo-Gen-Heim, the Guggenheim’s e-book release for children, follows the adventures of Andy, an inquisitive young boy who is enthralled by the architecture of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and the artworks by Kandinsky, Léger, and Picasso he discovers inside. Originally published in 1970, this acclaimed illustrated book by A. C. Hollingsworth is an engaging way to introduce children to modern art. The e-book edition ($6.99) is now available on iTunes and at the Guggenheim Store.

Additionally, essays from a variety of past Guggenheim publications have been made available for purchase as e-book singles. These essays were chosen to provide affordable access to in-demand out-of-print titles, particularly with students in mind. They include works such as Robert Rosenblum’s “From Realism to Symbolism, 1860–1900,” from Russia!, available at the Guggenheim Store for $1.99.
