Record breaking Crowds for Rembrandt and the Face of Jesus at Detroit Institute of Arts

January 7, 2012 – 10:58 amNo Comment

The popular exhibition Rembrandt and the Face of Jesus, at the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) through Feb. 12, broke attendance records for recent exhibitions at the museum, with more than 15,000 visitors during the week between Christmas and New Year’s. The number is around three times the typical weekly attendance for the exhibition.

“The response has been overwhelming,” said Graham W. J. Beal, DIA director. “Much of the positive feedback we have received focuses on how the exhibition is presented, which places Rembrandt and the works of art in historical and cultural context. We are delighted that our presentation has resonated with so many visitors.”

The DIA recommends not waiting until the last minute to buy or reserve tickets, says Pamela Marcil, DIA public relations director. “As is common with popular exhibitions, many people wait until the last week, or even the last day, to obtain tickets,” Marcil said. “It seems like there is so much time, but the weeks really sneak up on people, and we’d hate for anyone who wants to see these outstanding works of art to miss the opportunity.”

The museum is running a special half-off ticket price on Sunday, Jan. 8, which is a Ford Free Sunday. Although general museum admission is free that day, adults will still need to pay $8, and children ages 6–17 $4, to see the exhibition. Jan. 8 also features a lecture at 2 p.m. by Shelley Perlove entitled “Rembrandt’s Great Challenge: Visualizing Jesus.” The talk is free.

The museum and exhibition will also be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Martin Luther King Day, Monday, Jan. 16. A $6-off coupon is available at www.dia.org through Jan. 16. This CANNOT be used with other specials, such as the half-off Jan. 8 ticket price. It also does not apply to group sales.
