McNay Art Museum presents An El Greco Rediscovered

January 12, 2012 – 8:32 amNo Comment

The McNay Art Museum in San Antonio presents An El Greco Rediscovered, on view January 14-May 20, 2012.

El Greco (Doménikos Theotokópoulos) and workshop, Head of Christ, ca. 1579-86. Oil on canvas. Collection of the McNay Art Museum, Bequest of Marion Koogler McNay.

The McNay Art Museum’s Head of Christ, part of Marion Koogler McNay’s founding collection, has for many years been considered a studio version or later copy of a painting by El Greco (Doménikos Theotokopoulos, 1541 – 1614).

Recent conservation treatment has revealed the painting’s quality while scholarly research confirms the work is largely by El Greco himself, and appears to be related to the Disrobing of Christ altarpiece in the cathedral of Toledo Spain. The conservation process and comparison with other versions attributed to El Greco are the focus of the exhibition.
