The Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden announces The Sistine Madonna. Raphael’s iconic painting turns 500, an exhibition by the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, on view on 26 May to 26 August 2012.

The Sistine Madonna Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden

For the first time, the history of the Sistine Madonna will be presented chronologically in an exhibition: from its creation in Roman Renaissance to its life as a global myth of the present time.
The exhibition’s core is a top-class ensemble of works by Raphael and those of his time around the Sistine Madonna. Among the loans from the most important European museums are the “Donna Velata” (around 1512/13) from the Galleria Palatina at the Palazzo Pitti in Florence, the “Garvagh Madonna” (around 1510) from the National Gallery in London and a design for a fresco from the “Expulsion of Heliodor” (around 1512) lent from the Pinacoteca Vaticana.

Further sections of the exhibition invite the visitor to learn more about the spectacular acquisition of the painting for the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister, to follow its way to becoming a myth, and to take a closer look at the two angels, who sprawl at the lower image border and appeared for the first time around 1800 as an independent image motif and herewith started their own solo “career”.
