Barnum Museum presents Recovery in Action exhibition

The Barnum Museum presents Recovery in Action, an exhibition on view through January 4, 2013.

This new exhibition allows visitors, students and scholars a rare glimpse into The Barnum Museum’s visible storage area to witness the tornado recov- ery process first hand. The 5,000-foot gallery now houses thousands of objects that were out-loaded from the Museum’s historic building for safety and conservation. These objects range from architec- tural fragments to paintings, and the exhibition il- lustrates the disaster’s impact on these objects as well as strategies used to preserve materials from environmental deterioration. Recovery in Action! ex- plains the challenges of historic preservation, and the fascinating process of maintaining the vital- ity of a nationally significant institution.

Visitors will access the historic building through an exciting visual presentation that includes never before seen images taken by historic restoration architects, Swanke Hayden Connell, as well as video that highlights the 2010 tornado’s impact on the historic structure. Gallery talks hosted in the exhibition space will highlight best practices necessary for successful disaster recov- ery of a historic museum.
