ArtPace | San Antonio presents New artworks by International Artists-in-Residence

ArtPace | San Antonio presents New artworks by International Artists-in-Residence on view November 15, 2012–January 13, 2013.

Artpace San Antonio is pleased to announce the unveiling of new works by International Artists-in-Residence Dor Guez (Tel Aviv), David Benjamin Sherry (Los Angeles), and Sarah Sudhoff (San Antonio)—selected by guest curator Heidi Zuckerman Jacobson, Chief Executive Officer and Director, Chief Curator at the Aspen Art Museum. Their exhibitions opened on November 15 and will be on view through January 13, 2013.

Through installations that incorporate diverse media such as video, photographs, archives, and scanograms, Dor Guez focuses on issues of cultural identity surrounding his homeland by training the lens on his immediate environment. Drawing heavily on personal experiences and family history, his 40 DAYS provokes questions about the larger sociopolitical climate in the Middle East and the lives of marginalized groups in conflict areas.

David Benjamin Sherry photographs nature using traditional 4-by-5-inch film, which is altered in the darkroom, resulting in chromogenic prints in brilliant monochromatic hues. At Artpace, he extended his interest in portraying geological phenomena in vivid, unexpected colors in a foray into large-scale sculpture.

Known for documenting and deconstructing topics of femininity, mortality, and humanity in her photographs, Sarah Sudhoff was drawn to the residue of autoclaved medical waste and its future applications. A bench cast of recycled waste and concrete, along with mural-sized prints, abstract the subject matter, allowing closer examination of the material and encouraging a larger discussion of the impact humanity is making on the environment.

The International Artist-in-Residence program is made possible by the Linda Pace Foundation; the City of San Antonio’s Office of Cultural Affairs; and National Endowment for the Arts; with additional support from donors to the Linda Pace Memorial Fund.

The next trio of International Artists-in-Residence—Hassan Khan (Cairo), Tala Madani (Los Angeles), and J. Parker Valentine (Austin), selected by guest curator Suzanne Cotter—will be in residence at Artpace January 22 through March 25, 2013. Their exhibitions will open on March 21, 2012.

Each year, the International Artist-in-Residency program invites nine artists to conceive and create pivotal art projects. Artpace provides artists with unparalleled resources and allows them to take time, take risks, and unveil new ideas. Each residency is composed of one artist from Texas, one from elsewhere in the United States, and one from abroad. Artpace provides each artist with a two-month residency, which includes a materials budget, a weekly living stipend, an apartment, and studio/exhibition space, as well as fully equipped wood, metal, and computer facilities complete with technical and administrative support. The goal is to give artists a space in which to imagine new ways to work. The residency is followed by a two-month exhibition of the project created. All art made during the residency belongs to the artist. Resident artists are encouraged to share their ideas and become involved with the San Antonio and Texas arts communities.

Artpace’s Hudson (Show)Room exhibition, Swap Meet: Artpace and The Dikeou Collection, curated by Devon Dikeou, is on view through December 30, 2012.
