Hyde Collection Celebrates 50 Years as a Museum

Throughout 2013, The Hyde Collection celebrates its fiftieth year as a public museum with an exciting and diverse calendar of exhibitions, events, and programs. The Hyde’s permanent collection has over 3,300 works of fine and decorative arts, and the focus of the golden anniversary programs will be on objects that have entered the Museum’s permanent collection since 1963.

From January 27 through April 14, 2013, the exhibition 50 at 50: Five Decades of Collecting at The Hyde, 1963-2013 will present fifty works of art in the Wood Gallery. Featuring objects acquired by the Museum since the death of Charlotte Pruyn Hyde (1867-1963), the exhibition offers an unprecedented opportunity to reflect on the careful deliberation the Museum exercises in making acquisitions that enhance the legacy of the collection formed by her and Louis Fiske Hyde (1865-1934), her husband.

This exhibition will focus on the fastest growing area of the Museum’s collection, which is modern and contemporary art including paintings, drawings, prints, and sculpture by such artists as Joseph Beuys (1921-1986), Robert Cottingham (b. 1935), Sam Gilliam (b. 1933), Adolph Gottlieb (1903-1974), Philip Guston (1913-1980), Keith Haring (1958-1991), Dame Barbara Hepworth (1903-1975), Sol Lewitt (1928-2007), Diego Rivera (1886-1957), and David Smith (1906-1965). – www.hydecollection.org
