With painting as her primary medium, Plimack Mangold’s devotion to the realist tradition belies the aesthetics of the period of the late 1960s when she completed her studies at Yale University and Minimalism was a dominant movement. Plimack Mangold’s relationship with the pared down elements of that time, the power of space and the materials of the artist was manifest in her canvases with depictions of wooden floors, tapes and measures and, eventually, nature. For the last three decades she has concentrated not only on the landscape surrounding her Hudson River area studio, but also the individual trees comprising it. Through her paintings, drawings and prints, Plimack Mangold’s meditation on both the tradition of landscape, and the power of this subject in modern painting will be the subject of this exhibition. – www.norton.org
