Free Admission at Freedom Center on MLK Day PNC sponsoring free admission all day Jan. 21

CINCINNATI – The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center (NURFC) will offer free admission to all visitors on Martin Luther King Day (Jan. 21) again this year, thanks to generous underwriting from PNC.

“We are grateful PNC is continuing its generous support our mission of revealing the stories of freedom’s heroes by making the Freedom Center accessible to members of the community who might not otherwise be able to visit,” said Kim Robinson, executive director of NURFC. “Their funding enables us to inspire others right here in Cincinnati to take courageous steps for freedom.”

Past attendance at the NURFC on MLK Day (last year more than 5,000 people) demonstrates the demand for this opportunity. As NURFC has streamlined costs over the last few years, PNC has enabled the free day to continue. This is the third year PNC has sponsored the event.

“We are proud to partner with the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center to provide admission for this important day that celebrates hard-won freedoms,” says PNC Regional President Kay Geiger. “The educational opportunities provided and messages delivered through the Freedom Center are critical to ensuring historical mistakes are not repeated. Learning from our past ensures our future.”

Along with exhibit interpreters and hands-on stations during all museum hours (11 a.m.-5 p.m.), other activities/experiences taking place on MLK Day include:

The King Legacy Awards breakfast, 8-10:30 a.m. This community breakfast (sold out), presented in collaboration with the Cincinnati MLK Coalition, honors three youth and adult recipients of the King Legacy Award for community service. The MLK Day March begins outside the Freedom Center at 10:30 immediately following breakfast.

Hoxworth Blood Drive, 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
Emancipation and its Legacies, a new installation that examines the events leading up to and immediately after the Proclamation-including the Civil War, the Emancipation Process, Reconstruction and passage of the 13th-15th Amendments of the Constitution-and the impact they made on the course of our nation, through today.

Women Hold Up Half the Sky, a special exhibition on view through March 31 that tells the stories of women from around the globe who have changed their lives through education, economics and self-determination.

The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center is located at 50 E Freedom Way, Cincinnati, OH 45202. For more information, visit freedomcenter.org or call 513.333.7500.
