ARTER – space for art presents Envy, Enmity, Embarrassment

ARTER – space for art presents Envy, Enmity, Embarrassment. New productions by artists from Turkey, an exhibition on view 24 January–7 April 2013, curated by ARTER’s Exhibitions Director, Emre Baykal.

Envy, Enmity, Embarrassment is the second exhibition of a series that ARTER initiated in 2010 as a benchmark event and focuses entirely on new productions. The series responds to ARTER’s mission of providing a platform for the visibility of artistic practices, supporting the production of contemporary artworks and presenting this production through exhibitions.

The three terms brought together in the title of the exhibition are used as keywords for expressing social, cultural and political memory within contemporary artistic discourse and initiate an intellectual process resulting in the creation and production of a series of new works. The exhibition aims to explore these three interconnected concepts that precede, follow and complete each other in a broad web of causality, in a wide perspective that incorporates diverse contexts ranging from political and social violence to the media; from careerist concerns and ambitions to gender politics; from potentialities of “friendship” and “solidarity” to “aggressive” and “destructive” drives. While revisiting—although partially—a recent collective history marked by violence and disgrace, the exhibition explores destructive feelings—which we cautiously conceal and keep silenced as they are harmful not only to others but also to ourselves—as well as the traumas associated with them.

Artists participating in Envy, Enmity, Embarrassment are Selim Birsel, Hera Büyüktaşçıyan, CANAN, Aslı Çavuşoğlu, Merve Ertufan & Johanna Adebäck, Nilbar Güreş, Berat Işık, Şener Özmen, Yusuf Sevinçli, Erdem Taşdelen, Hale Tenger and Mahir Yavuz.

Envy, Enmity, Embarrassment will continue at ARTER until 7 April 2013.

About ARTER
An initiative of the Vehbi Koç Foundation (VKF), “ARTER – space for art,” opened in May 2010. ARTER’s programmes are created with the aim of encouraging production of contemporary artworks both nationally and internationally, providing a platform of visibility for artistic practices, especially in Turkey. ARTER offers artists a sustainable infrastructure for artistic production in terms of funding, exhibiting, promotion and publications, as well as support for educational activities. ARTER is also providing an experimental and testing ground in preparation for the museum the Vehbi Koç Foundation envisions. The ARTER building is situated on Istiklal Avenue, Istanbul’s main artery for culture and arts. It was built in the 1910s and its conversion into an exhibition space has been completed in September 2009. The renewed building has an exhibition area of 864 square meters spread over four floors.
