V-A-C Foundation presents Olga Chernysheva Compossibilities

V-A-C Foundation presents Olga Chernysheva Compossibilities on view 4 July–25 August 2013.

With her gift for delicate, empathic observation, Olga Chernysheva discovers art in the everyday. Her multimedia works tell of simple, yet wondrous people and things. Chernysheva’s work represents a new kind of realism that does not feed on a critical, subversive attitude, but is characterised by an awareness of compossibility. This relational concept, devised by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, states that different beliefs, viewpoints, patterns of thought and substances are compossible, meaning that it is possible for them to coexist in reality. Although not everything that can be imagined or conceived bears this potential, the real, extant world is the site or embodiment of the compossible. As such, it is also the inexhaustible source of Chernysheva’s art.

V-A-C Foundation, a Moscow-based not-for-profit institution committed to the international presentation, production and development of Russian contemporary art, in collaboration with Kunsthalle Erfurt, is proud to present a major solo exhibition of Olga Chernysheva’s work for the first time in Germany, curated by Silke Opitz. In addition to watercolors, drawings and paintings from recent years, the exhibition features photographs, a wide selection of videos and several new works. The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated German-English catalogue, published by Hantje Cantz.

Olga Chernysheva (b. 1962 Moscow, where she currently lives and works) is a graduate of the Gerassimov Institute of Cinematography and has completed the Residency Programme at the Rijksakademie Amsterdam. In addition to numerous international solo and group exhibitions, including the 2006 Sydney Biennial and the 2010 Berlin Biennial, Chernysheva represented Russia at the Venice Biennale in 2001. She also participated in the Moscow Photography Biennial in 2004 and the exhibition Moscow-Berlin/Berlin-Moscow. In 2006, Chernysheva took part in the exhibition Caspar David Friedrich – The Invention of Romanticism in Hamburg and Essen. Her works are featured in renowned public and private collections throughout the world.
