Museu Colecao Berardo announce Carla Filipe da cauda a cabeca

. January 28, 2014

Museu Colecao Berardo present Carla Filipe da cauda a cabeca on January 29–May 4, 2014, an exhibition by Carla Filipe (b. 1973). This artist is responsible for one of the most solid and significant artistic projects to have emerged in Portugal in recent years, garnering international recognition.

The project now presented at the Museu Coleção Berardo is a new, large-scale work that takes the Portuguese railway system as its starting point. According to the artist, the exhibition will have two different moments: “A more sensory one, evoking the landscape, geography and territory of the country. And another that focuses on museology and the different ways in which an archive can be shown. This section includes items from different sources that range from the artist’s personal archive to other private collections. These elements, documents and objects taken from different archives will share the exhibition space with works of art, thereby helping to broaden the concept of what a contemporary art institution can be today so as to take in a multiplicity of discourses on the subject. By creating a situation in which art and archival elements share the space of the museum, I aim to enhance the spectator’s knowledge of the Portuguese railway system from a broader perspective that includes its geography, architecture, socio-political context and musealization.”

In the words of Pedro Lapa, the artistic director of the museum and the curator of this exhibition, Carla Filipe’s work “undertakes an archaeology of questions and ways of life, which, in the course of modernity, have awakened expectations that are realized in wide-ranging ways. Many of her works have an autobiographical slant, taking the form of micro-stories, or relating to history itself. All of them involve a narrative structure in which drawings, objects, text and installation are recurring media.”

Carla Filipe has shown her work in several exhibitions such as Manifesta 8 or the more recent 13th Istanbul Biennial.
