Relive the era of big band music, classic cars and the Lindy

Cincinnati Museum Center hosts 1940s Weekend August 9 & 10

CINCINNATI – Travel back in time and experience life in the 1940s during Cincinnati Museum Center’s 1940s Weekend on August 9 and 10. From the minute you step on the front lawn for our classic car show, you’ll be transported to the era of big bands, pin curls and World War II. Inside Union Terminal, you can get your hair and makeup done, learn the Lindy, get an actual taste of the 1940s, play part in a historic Cincinnati Radio Show and brush up on your 1940s knowledge with artifact displays and presentations from local organizations.

1940s weekendAnd don’t forget to marvel at the largest artifact in our collection, Union Terminal itself, a Cincinnati landmark. By 1944, more than 34,000 soldiers and civilians passed through the building’s 106-foot-tall rotunda every day! Join us for 1940s Weekend on August 9 and 10 to celebrate this pivotal decade in American History. Read on for details about the weekend’s events.

5th Annual Cincy Lindy Exchange
In conjunction with 1940s Weekend, Cincinnati Museum Center will host the 5th annual Cincy Lindy Exchange, an event featuring more than 120 dancers from at least 10 states. On Sunday from 1 to 5p.m., the dancers will showcase their talents in the Rotunda with live music provided by the Jump ‘N’ Jive Show Band. Throw on your dancing shoes and learn the Lindy with free lessons from the dancers from 12 to 1 p.m.

Enjoy 1940s-era music with live entertainment provided by Jump ‘N’ Jive Show Band, The Sugar Pills All-Girl Ukulele Band, the Queen City Sisters, Daniel Bennett and the Dirty Shirleys, and the P&G Big Band.

Classic Cars once again park at Union Terminal
Even outside of the building you will be transported back to the 1940s. Union Terminal’s Art Deco exterior provides the perfect setting for our classic car show, featuring cars from the 1920s, 30s and 40s, which will be on display all weekend.

Lectures feature concentration camp liberator and Holocaust survivor
On Saturday, August 9, Concentration Camp Liberator Saul Marmur will share his experience serving in WWII.

On Sunday, August 10, Holocaust Survivor Stephanie Marks will share her inspiring journey through Poland, Belgium and Portugal, ultimately reaching the United States after the outbreak of WWII.

Fire up the projector for classic films and newsreels
Roy Rogers classic cowboy films Young Buffalo Bill, Sunset in El Dorado, Under California Stars, and Down Dakota Way will be showing in our restored Newsreel theatre along with documentary Rescue in the Philippines and 1940s newsreel and cartoons. And don’t miss our own recreation of a Roy Rogers Cowboy show on Union Terminal’s front lawn.

Activities and displays in the Cincinnati History Museum and Cincinnati Dining Room will give you a glimpse at actual objects from the 1940s. Some of the local organizations presenting displays include:

Hair and makeup styling and radio show highlight hands-on programming
In Collett Gallery join hairstylist Ginger Watson and learn how to do your ‘do with 1940’s hair and makeup tutorials.
In the Newsreel Theatre, act, yell and play along with our Seckatary Hawkins mock-radio show about a go-getting youngster who solves crimes along the Ohio Riverbanks.

Join us in the Cincinnati Dining room to get a taste of the era with an all-day 1940s food tasting.

Transport the entire family to the 1940s with an immersive experience at Cincinnati Museum Center’s 1940s Weekend on August 9 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and August 10 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission to the event is free for members. For non-Members, a 1940s weekend Combo Pass including single-day admission to the Cincinnati History Museum is $13 for adults, $12 for seniors and $11 for children and can be purchased at www.cincymuseum.org.
