Two Exhibitions Openings at the Contemporary Arts Center

MEMBERS ONLY LOBBY OPENING CELEBRATION MARCH 13, 2015 • 7–9PM

Our newly renovated lobby in Kaplan Hall will be unveiled on March 13th! Members will be able to see the new bar, store and lounge areas in addition to the vibrant lobby installations done by three different artist/groups.

7-8PM – Artist Presentation with Erwin Redl, Assume Vivid Astro Focus & Matt Kotlarczyk (CAC Insiders and above)
7:30-9PM – Lobby Preview with a cash bar (All CAC Members)

Members will be greeted by a bright and colorful new installation as soon as they come in the doors! Artist collaborative Assume Vivid Astro Focus has designed a highly saturated vinyl decal that will line the lobby walls and stairwell to the lower level. Both of the artists, Eli Sudbrack and Christophe Hamaide-Pierson, also created an outside cover that will wrap around the CAC building in a similar fashion to the JR piece from 2013.

Another piece by artist Erwin Redl will span the entire length of Zaha Hadid’s Urban Carpet. From the first floor to the UnMuseum on the 6th floor, Redl has installed white lights that blink and sway like pendulums. The resulting display can be seen all over the center and is only amplified by the windows, glass ceilings and reflective surfaces scattered throughout the building.

The final piece created for Kaplan Hall was made by local artist Matt
Kotlarczyk. His addition to the lobby can be seen by looking up to the ceiling at his cloud chandeliers. These bright, curving sculptures have been placed along the ceiling at various locations.
The Lobby Preview is a Members Only event – renew your memberships or join the CAC now!

EXHIBITION OPENING CELEBRATION
Albano Afonso: Self-Portrait as Light, co-presented with 21c Museum Hotel

Daniel Arsham: Remember the Future

MARCH 20, 2015 • 7–11PM

One week after the unveiling of our lobby transformation, we will yet again reimagine our galleries with work by two stunning artists. Join us for the opening celebration on March 20, 2015.

7PM – Artist Talk with Daniel Arsham (All CAC Members)
8PM – Opening Celebration (CAC Members FREE; Non-members $10 • Cash Bar)

Coming off his wildly successful showing during Art Basel in Miami, Florida, Cleveland born artist Daniel Arsham (image top left) is set to present his second solo exhibition, Remember the Future, at the Contemporary Arts Center. Arsham will bring with him nearly 3,000 individual artifacts cast from 20th century media devices such as telephones, projectors and boom boxes. The resulting artwork can be compared to an archaeological dig happening far into the future. There will also be casts of life size figures made from crushed glass and ghostly human shapes that appear to be emerging from surrounding walls.
The Contemporary Arts Center will also be co-presenting an exhibition with the 21c Museum Hotel with work by Brazillian artist Albano Afonso (image top right) entitled Self-Portrait as Light. In his first major exhibition in the United States, Afonso strives to give light a scultpural presence. To accomplish this, Afonso has used famous oil paintings from the western canon and perforated their surface to give visitors a layered look at familiar pieces.

This collaboration between the Contemporary Arts Center and the 21c Museum Hotel emerged from CAC Curator Steven Matijcio and 21c Museum Hotel VP, Museum Director Alice Gray Stites’ shared history with, and affinity for, Afonso’s work. Matijcio, having followed the artist’s work since viewing it in São Paulo, Brazil, in 2006, saw one his photos featured in an exhibition Stites curated at 21c Museum Hotel in 2013; the institution has been a loyal patron of Afonso.
