Michener Art Museum Hosts Popular Summer Concert Series

(Doylestown, PA) The Michener Art Museum is pleased to present the summer concert series, “A Little Night Music.” The three performances, scheduled for June 24, July 8 and 29 are held in the Museum’s Edgar N. Putman Event Pavilion. All concerts begin at 7:00 and run to 8:30 pm.

The three-part series, made possible by the support of the Pfundt Family Foundation, begins with An Evening with Lerner, Loesser, Loewe… and Schwartz! and is presented by the Bristol Riverside Theatre on Wednesday, June 24. Featured are the award-winning songwriters who created some of the world’s most popular works of music for stage and screen. Songs include selections from My Fair Lady, That’s Entertainment, Guys and Dolls and many more. Produced by Bristol Riverside Theatre (BRT), five singers and the BRT Concert Band will bring to life the songs of these great composers. BRT is an award-winning Equity theatre in Bucks County. In its 28th season, it has grown to produce more than 200 performances annually, including five Mainstage productions, special events and a summer musicale series.

The summer concert series continues on Wednesday, July 8, with romantic songs from the Great American Songbook presented by acclaimed mezzo soprano Suzanne DuPlantis in cabaret, with Harold Evans, piano and Emilio Gravagno, bass. The program, Speak Lo, will feature the best of Jerome Kern, George and Ira Gershwin, Rodgers and Hart, Kurt Weill, Cole Porter and more. DuPlantis, Founder and Artistic Director of Lyric Fest, is noted for her moving renditions of melodies and for her intimate way with an audience. Before focusing her career on song and concert work, she was a professional opera singer. DuPlantis has performed with some of Philadelphia’s finest arts organizations and has premiered new works including Kile Smith’s latest song cycle, “In This Blue Room.”

The series concludes on Wednesday, July 29, with soprano Emily Eisen presenting An Evening of Impressionist Song. The music highlights the mutual admiration and inspiration between art and music in the time of Impressionism. The program will introduce the evocative world of French Impressionist song, anchored by the mélodies of Claude Debussy (Ariettes oubliées, Fêtes galantes pour Madame Vasnier). Eisen will explore the influence of French Impressionism on American composers, including Charles Griffes and Philadelphia’s own Samuel Barber. Originally performed in private homes and intimate salons, these songs would have intermingled with the art, ideas, and energy of the society around them. The program offers a unique experience of hearing music while appreciating the art of its time exhibited in the Pennsylvania Impressionists galleries. Eisen has performed with Center Stage Opera, Delaware Valley Opera Company, Poor Richard’s Opera and Children’s Opera Box. She has been a soloist with Vox Ama Deus and the Vox Renaissance Consort, and given recitals at the Woodmere Art Museum and the Settlement Music School, where she was a member of the Voice Faculty.

“The Michener will be a center for impressive musical talent this summer season in the elegant Edgar N. Putman Event Pavilion overlooking the Patricia D. Pfundt Sculpture Garden,” says Director of Programs Zoriana Siokalo. “What better atmosphere could there be for listening to talented musicians.”

Museum galleries and the Patricia D. Pfundt Sculpture Garden are open until 8:30 pm. The Café will remain open until 8 pm serving a chef-inspired selection of small plates and non-alcoholic beverages for purchase before and during the performances.

Fee per event: $10 member/$20 non-member/$5 student with valid ID, includes Museum admission.
