Cincinnati Museum Center brings science to life with STEM Girls

Cincinnati Museum Center program connects hands-on programming with STEM experts and mentors

CINCINNATI – Cincinnati Museum Center is taking science out of the textbook and making it come alive with STEM Girls, an interactive program that takes a hands-on approach to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). STEM Girls programming will take place in the MakerSpace at the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County’s main branch downtown.

STEM GirlsSTEM Girls, formerly Girls In Real Life Sciences (GIRLS), introduces the world of STEM to girls ages 8-14. As more careers utilize STEM skills, getting children interested in STEM early is critical for future success, especially for young girls for whom science classes and careers are not often targeted. STEM Girls connects elementary and middle school-aged girls with STEM content in an engaging way that makes them eager to learn more. The program also connects girls with women in STEM fields, including chemists, meteorologists, computer coders and more.

“History is filled with women who have made incredible strides in medicine, chemistry, astronomy, aeronautics and more, but their names are still far too few,” says Elizabeth Pierce, president and CEO of Cincinnati Museum Center. “STEM Girls is about to change that by demonstrating just how fascinating science is and filling the 21st century with women chemists, doctors, astronauts, veterinarians and physicists.”

During the repair and restoration of Union Terminal, STEM Girls will make their temporary home at the Library’s MakerSpace, combining its state of the art technology with the expertise of Cincinnati Museum Center staff. At the MakerSpace, STEM Girls participants will have an opportunity to design, code and play their very own video game with the help from professional computer coders, or learn how Procter & Gamble researchers use chemistry to bring special effects to the stage and screen, to create new products and to save lives around the world.

The program also takes participants on the road with STEM Girls Day Out. Visit the labs, facilities and offices of women who are actively working in STEM fields to see how and what they do. Spend the afternoon exploring active STEM worksites, participating in hands-on activities and discussing STEM careers.

Meet real-life superheroes on a tour of Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center where women in health sciences save lives every day on August 27. Or explore the many facets of Earth science with the staff, faculty and graduate students of Miami University’s geology, botany and zoology departments.
