. September 7, 2016

CINCINNATI, OH – The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center will host award-winning author, historian and Draper Chair in American History at the University of Connecticut, Storrs Dr. Manisha Sinha on Tuesday, September 20 at 6:00 p.m. Dr. Sinha, the second speaker in the 2016-2017 John & Francie Pepper Freedom Lecture Series, will discuss her latest work, The Slave’s Cause: A History of Abolition. The lecture is free open and to the public. RSVPs are requested.

The Slave’s Cause: A History of Abolition reveals the groundbreaking history of abolition that recovers the largely forgotten role of African Americans in the long march toward emancipation from the American Revolution through the Civil War. The Slave’s Cause is a comprehensive new history of the abolition movement that illustrates how the abolitionist vision ultimately linked the slave’s cause to the struggle to redefine American democracy and human rights across the globe.

“We are looking forward to hosting Dr. Sinha for this engaging public conversation,” says Dr. Michael Battle, executive vice president and provost of the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. “Her impressive body of work allows for a new generation of students, educators and thought-leaders to connect with the history of abolition with new accuracy and depth—redefining what we thought we knew about America’s historical freedom movements.”

The John & Francie Pepper Freedom Lecture Series connects the public with award-winning authors, historians and thought-leaders, discussing themes on history, race, culture and modern abolition. Cincy Magazine is the print media sponsor for the 2016-2017 series. In addition to Dr. Sinha’s lecture on September 20, the public will have the opportunity to hear from Harry Lembeck where he will discuss his latest work, Taking on Theodore Roosevelt: How One Senator Defied The President on Brownville and Shook American Politics on November 1.
