Educator Open House: An Inspiring Evening of Freedom at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center

September 20 Event Features National Teacher of the Year Finalist Kathy Nimmer

CINCINNATI, OH – The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center will host Educator Open House: An Inspiring Evening of Freedom on Wednesday, September 20 at 5:30 p.m. The event will feature Kathy Nimmer, 2015 Indiana Teacher of the Year and finalist for the 2015 National Teacher of the Year. The program is free and open to the public. RSVPs are requested.

Educators and champions of education are encouraged to join and participate in an evening of networking, music and a keynote from Kathy Nimmer. An English and Creative Writing teacher in Indiana, Nimmer is also a motivational speaker, writer and guide dog handler. Recently, she received the Dollywood Foundation’s 2016 Chasing Rainbows Award, the National Federation of the Blind’s 2016 Blind Educator of the Year Award, and the Hasbrook Award – a lifetime achievement honor sponsored by Bosma Industries. Among other honors, she was named Sagamore of the Wabash in 2014, the highest civilian honor in Indiana. Dr. Thomas Tucker, Superintendent of Princeton City Schools will MC the evening of inspiration for educators.

“We are honored to have someone of Ms. Nimmer’s caliber come and speak with regional educators,” says Tara Riley, Interim Director of Museum Experiences at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. “Her story will not only inspires not only educators, but professionals across all fields.”

Nimmer currently teaches writing at Harrison High School in West Lafayette and serves as Tippecanoe School Corporation’s new teacher coach and mentor. She earned her BA in English Education from Trinity Christian College in 1991 and her MA from Purdue University in 1992.
