Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum to offer free admission in February

The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum is offering free admission Monday through Friday this February, thanks to the generous support of Free in February sponsors Shore United Bank and Awful Arthur’s of St. Michaels, Md.

During February, CBMM guests will receive a discount card for 15% off all meals at Awful Arthur’s, which will be redeemable through March 15, 2018.

Located along the Miles River in historic St. Michaels, Md., CBMM’s campus is a short walk or drive to area restaurants, shops, inns, hotels, and other attractions. Free admission covers access to CBMM’s numerous indoor and outdoor spaces, including the 1879 Hooper Strait Lighthouse, a working boatyard, and numerous permanent and changing exhibitions focused on the traditions, environment, and history of the entire Chesapeake Bay region.

Progress on the log-hull restoration of the 1889 bugeye Edna E. Lockwood is now underway and in full public view in CBMM’s boatyard, and continues through 2018. The nine-log bugeye was built by John B. Harrison on Tilghman Island, Md., in 1889 and is the oldest of her kind still under sail. The oystering boat is a National Historic Landmark and was donated to CBMM in 1967 by John R. Kimberly.

“This winter, come and experience the Edna Lockwood restoration before it wraps up in October 2018. Our shipwrights and apprentices are now fairing the new hull with the old topsides, and it’s incredible to watch the transformation,” said CBMM President Kristen Greenaway. “We also have a great number of exhibitions for all ages to enjoy, and this time of year offers clear, underwater views of oyster beds, and abundant waterfowl and wildlife along our living shoreline and quiet waterfront.”

This winter, CBMM members and guests can enjoy several special exhibitions, including Robert de Gast’s Chesapeake, Potomac Waterfowling: Gunning the Nation’s Rivers, and Bob Grieser’s Lens on the Chesapeake.

Admission will be free weekdays in February for all CBMM guests. General admission is otherwise good for two consecutive days and is $15 for adults, $12 for seniors and students with ID, $6 for children 6-17, and free for CBMM members and children five and under. During the winter months, CBMM is open 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. seven days a week, except for Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day. Inclement weather closings are announced at cbmm.org
