Museo Reina Sofía opens María Blanchard exhibition

Museo Reina Sofía presents María Blanchard, an exhibition of work on view October 17, 2012 – February 25, 2013.

The exhibition dedicated to María Blanchard (Santander, 1881 – Paris, 1932) seeks to recover this Spanish artist who experienced painting with all of its uncertainties and convictions and who would end up becoming one of the great figures of the avant-garde.

Maria Blanchard, Naturaleza Muerta-Composicion, 1916-1917. Oleo sobre lienzo, 170 x 102 cm. Coleccion privada, Madrid.

Her artistic development came late and she did not reach creative maturity until well into her thirties, after moving to Paris. For many years, until the 1960s with the arrival of the book by Rodríguez Alcalde, she was the object of a biased vision that reduced the study of her pictorial work to a few clichés and focused primarily on finding a biographical justification for her style.

The Museo Reina Sofía program is based on a redefinition of the function of museums, on an alternative to the institution’s historical models. Conceived to be a place that generates opportunities for sociability and discussion in the public sphere, the Museum proposes models of resistance in a society in which consumption and merchandise predominate and in which production has become fragmented, thus resulting in a geopolitical map hitherto unknown, and also in new social classes, relations and subjectivities. Creating alternative narrations, developing new forms of intermediation and forming active spectators are the Museum’s main priorities. – www.museoreinasofia.es
