WASHINGTON – The National Geographic Museum will open a new photography exhibition, “Simply Beautiful: Photographs from National Geographic,” on Sept. 3, taking visitors on a visual journey through variations on the universal theme of beauty.
The more than 50 images in the exhibition plumb the depth of National Geographic’s Image Collection to highlight the loveliest and most appealing photographs from this impressive archive. The result is an experience of visual delight, from stunning landscapes and magnificent wildlife to fascinating people and quaint locales. The exhibition makes one ponder what creates beauty in a photograph, and illustrates how photographers can compose an image that provides visual proof that there is beauty, often overlooked, in nearly everything.
“Simply Beautiful” is free to the public and will be open through Feb. 6, 2011. The exhibition is part of FotoWeek DC 2010, a celebration of photography in the nation’s capital Nov. 6-13.
The exhibition is based on the new National Geographic book, National Geographic Simply Beautiful Photographs (National Geographic Books; ISBN 978-1-4262-0645-0; on-sale date: Oct. 19, 2010; $35 hardcover).
For the book, award-winning National Geographic photographer Annie Griffiths chose remarkable images from the Society’s core mission areas: exploration, wildlife, cultures, science and nature. Annie Griffiths will give an illustrated talk, “Capturing Beauty,” on Monday, Oct. 25, at 7:30 p.m. as part of the National Geographic Live!
