The Chemical Heritage Foundation Museum Presents Marvels and Ciphers: A Look Inside the Flask, open through December 10, 2010.
For centuries, with means ranging from alchemy to quantum-enabled technologies, scientists have struggled to understand the material world—with varying degrees of success. Public responses to scientific debate and discovery are even more varied. A single breakthrough can elicit fascination and hope as well as anxiety and fear.
With paintings, photographs, books, and cartoons, Marvels and Ciphers explores the inevitable social complexity of scientific pursuits.
The Chemical Heritage Foundation is a library, museum, and archive in Philadelphia that was founded in 1982.
CHF’s integrated museum and conference center was a $20 million project that involved the renovation of the 1865 First National Bank building at CHF’s headquarters in Philadelphia. The transformation of the space and the design of Making Modernity were the collaborative effort of SaylorGregg Architects, CHF’s curatorial and exhibit staff, and Ralph Appelbaum Associates, renowned designers of the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.
The renovated facility employs ecologically sensitive Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) principles, including new insulation, wall tile made of recycled glass, and bathroom floors made of recycled cans.
