The DŌSHI Gallery at the Susquehanna Art Museum presents an exhibition of ceramics by Shalya Marsh in Illumination. Open through December 5, 2010.
In Illumination, visitors can view Shalya Marsh’s work which expresses the intrinsic limitation that language places on communication, through the use of decipherable codes and symbols. Marsh’s hand built ceramic sculptures reference illuminated manuscripts, ancient cuneiforms, and primitive accounting systems known as tokens. These archaic systems of recording information are juxtaposed with modern codes and ciphers such as binary, substitution, and Morse. The viewer is invited to literally decode the piece’s nonsensical pangrams and whimsical definitions.
Shalya Marsh earned her Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, Ceramics at the Sate University of New York at New Paltz, NY in 1999. In addition to receiving her B.F.A., Marsh has been trained at the Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina and the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Tennesee. Her professional experience demonstrates a strong background in art and education. Most recently, she became the newest inductee of the Echo Valley Art Group. Marsh is proud to be a part of the Philadelphia Center for Emerging Visual Artists, where she was recently awarded their alumni solo exhibition. Her body of work has been shown extensively throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the Mid-Atlantic Region. Notably, Marsh captured first place in “Art of the State 2006” as well as being selected for “Art of the State 2010” held at the State Museum of Pennsylvania located in Harrisburg.
The DŌSHI Center for Contemporary Art, founded by Maya Schock in Harrisburg in 1972, was incorporated into the operations of the Susquehanna Art Museum in 1997. In spirit with the mission of the original DŌSHI Center (named for a Japanese word meaning “brotherhood”), the DŌSHI Gallery provides a venue for emerging and established Pennsylvania artists to exhibit their work, explore new ideas, and develop a dialogue with the Museum and the community.
