The Natural History Museum in London presents The Hidden Depths of Lake Baikal a Talk in the Attenborough Studio on14 December 2010 at 14:30.
Lake Baikal is also known as the pearl of Siberia. A special place, it’s home to one fifth of the world’s reserves of fresh water and more than 1,300 animal species.
In its 25 million year history, the lake has served as a natural laboratory for evolution, so that about three quarters of species in the lake evolved there and are found nowhere else on Earth.
Join Museum researcher Geoff Boxshall as he explains more about this extraordinary lake and describes his experience travelling to the very bottom in a submersible.
