The San Diego Museum of Art will present a major exhibition on the West Coast of work by Howard Hodgkin from January 29 to May 1, 2011.
Time and Place explores the most recent work of Howard Hodgkin (born 1932), one of Great Britain’s most renowned painters of the later 20th century. Comprised of over 20 paintings, this exhibition spans the last 10 years of the artist’s career and includes a number of works not previously seen by a broad public. The exhibition also features a powerful body of new work, painted in the last year, never exhibited before. The San Diego Museum of Art is proud to be the only U.S. venue for this exhibition and to host the first major museum show of his work to be held on the West Coast.
Celebrated for almost half a century, Hodgkin’s art is characterized by integrity and rigor. Time and Place, however, is emphatically about the here and now. It brings together 23 paintings, several works are exhibited for the first time in this show. Collectively, their vigor and radical address confirm Hodgkin’s enduring contemporary significance.
Time and Place offers a fresh view of the artist’s work and reveals his continuing relevance as one of the most vital, radical, and compelling painters of our time. The exhibition’s title implicitly connects Hodgkin’s most recent work to his long-standing evocation of memory, through the act of painting.
Howard Hodgkin: Time and Place is organized by Modern Art Oxford in partnership with the De Pont Museum of Contemporary Art, Tilburg, and The San Diego Museum of Art. A fully illustrated book accompanies the exhibition and is available from The San Diego Museum of Art. It features an essay by Sam Smiles, Emeritus Professor of Art History, University of Plymouth (UK), as well as a “Reader” of critical responses to Hodgkin’s work selected from over the course of his career.
Born in London in 1932, Hodgkin attended Camberwell School of Art and the Bath Academy of Art, Corsham. In 1984, he represented Britain at the Venice Biennale and in the following year won the Turner Prize. He has exhibited internationally for more than four decades and his work is included in major public and private collections all over the world. Museum surveys include Paintings 1975-1995, organized by the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, which opened at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and toured to Fort Worth, Düsseldorf and London, and a retrospective presented at the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin (2006), Tate Britain and Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid. A survey of his small paintings was presented at the Yale Center for British Art, New Haven in 2007, and the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, and in 2008 Gagosian Gallery, London, presented an exhibition of 20 new paintings.
