Sir John Soane’s Museum Presents Michael Petry Bad Seed

Sir John Soane’s Museum presents Michael Petry: Bad Seed on view through 12 March 2011.

The second part of Petry’s residency at the Soane sees the artist return to the Museum with works inspired by Sir John Soanes’ family history. The resultant biomorphic sculptures, in blown glass, take their inspiration from the legendry incubus and succubus, disturbing night-time spirits that inspired many Gothick writers and painters, such as Henry Fuseli. The works also draw inspiration from Sir John Soane’s architecture playing with reflection, transparency and colour to mirror the effects achived in the interiors of 13 Lincoln’s Inn Fields.

Appropriately, Petry’s installations coincide with the restoration of the Museum’s significant holdings of historical, figurative stained glass panels which will be returned to their original locations as Soane intended. Petry’s work is a contemporary exploration of the skills and artistry of earlier glass craftsmen and this exhibition echoes and continues Sir John Soane’s ambition to support British artists and crafts.

Michael Petry is an alumnus of Rice University, Houston , Texas, London Guildhall University and is currently finishing a PhD at Middlesex University. He teaches at the Royal Academy where he is also Curator of the Royal Academy Schools Gallery and at the Royal College. His work is represented in public collections at The Museum of Arts and Design, New York, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, The Toledo Museum of Art, The British Museum, and The Government Art Collections, UK. His work will be exhibited at ‘Glasstress’ as part of the 2011 Venice Biennale. His new book ‘Crafty: the art of not making’, will be published by Thames and Hudson in March 2011.

This exhibition is kindly supported by the Westbrook Gallery, London.

Sir John Soane’s Museum is the idiosyncratic house-museum of the great Neo-Classical architect Sir John Soane (1753 – 1837) and still displays his collection of antiquities, furniture, models and paintings in the same state in which they were left at the time of his death as well as preserving over 30,000 architectural drawings and a fine Library.
