Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) Announces Third Annual South Asian Heritage Day

The Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) and the ROM’s Friends of South Asia present the third annual South Asian Heritage Day in honor of the third anniversary of the opening of the Sir Christopher Ondaatje South Asian Gallery, located on Level 3 of the Michael Lee-Chin Crystal. With a full day of special events and programming designed to showcase the rich history and incredible cultural diversity of the region, Saturday February 26, 2011 promises something for every taste.

Inspired by the 150th birthday anniversary of Nobel-prizing winning artist/writer/poet Rabindranath Tagore, South Asian Heritage Day features a line-up of art, film, music, dance and children’s activities, including:

Mainstage Tribute to Tagore – 11:30 am to 1:30 pm
The Poetics of Colour – Canadian Premiere in Eaton Theatre – 2:45 pm
Sohan Qadri – Unveiling & Tea with Artist – 4:00 pm
Bright Oriental Star – Video Installation by Rachel Kalpana James

South Asian Heritage Day will also feature special children’s activities, guided tours and dance performances by Sampradaya Dance Academy in the Sir Christopher Ondaatje South Asian Gallery.

Programming for South Asian Heritage Day is included with Museum admission. Adults: $24; Students and seniors with ID: $21; Children: (4 to 14 years): $16; Children 3 & under are free.

ABOUT SIR CHRISTOPHER ONDAATJE SOUTH ASIAN GALLERY
Located on Level 3 of the Michael Lee-Chin Crystal, this gallery’s approximate 350 objects reflect the ROM’s vast and diverse collections representing the artistic and cultural traditions of South Asia. Nine thematically organized areas present religious objects and sculpture, decorative arts, arms and armour, miniature paintings and textiles spanning over 5,000 years and originating from countries including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Tibet and the Maldives.
