The Attleboro Arts Museum presents India American Experience: The Work of Photographer Mahendra Paul along with The Art of the Sari. Exhibition dates: June 9 – 17, 2011.
The Museum’s India American Experience exhibition is part of a 5 month-long “Becoming American” reading/multimedia Attleboro-wide program coordinated by Attleboro’s 1ABC (1 Adventure, 1 Book, 1 Community). Each month will feature a book, a film, discussions and a main event based on the immigrants experiences from five chosen groups. The program runs from February – June 2011.
June will spotlight the India American experience. Sponsored by the India Association of Rhode Island (IARI), the community will be encouraged to read “Interpreter of Maladies” by Jhumpa Lahiri. This short story collection, which won the 2000 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, includes stories about the lives of India born and India Americans who are caught between the culture they have inherited and the New World.
June 15, a public luncheon will take place during an extended meeting of the Attleboro Rotary Club, with guest speakers Amir and Tapiti Lahiri, parents of Jhumpa Lahiri, speaking on the “Interpreter of Maladies” theme of raising a bi-cultural child in today’s American society. A Bollywood Film Festival is planned for Bristol Community College, Attleboro, MA on Thursday, June 23rd at 7:00 p.m.
(The Attleboro Cultural Council is a partial sponsor of the “Becoming American” series)
