Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) Alumni Sales Gallery’s New Exhibition Opens

The new Alumni Sales Gallery at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) presents Water As The Source, on view April 29 – July 23, 2011, a group exhibition of works by Eliza Auth, Pat Boyer, James Brantley, Joe Danciger, Fred Danziger, Joann Doneen, Carolyn Hesse, Whitney Knapp, Zach Martin, Peter Schnore and Robin Tedesco.

Focusing on the study and interpretation of water as a source of inspiration, the exhibition includes a range of media and styles, from Doneen’s delicate shoreline paintings, seen from an aerial perspective, Danziger’s work inspired by the rich life in tidal pools, Knapp’s interest in the effect of atmospheric relationships on the water’s surface, to Eliza Auth and James Brantley’s expression of silence and solitude through contrasting color palettes.

Water As The Source was juried by Mary Salvante, an independent curator and Director of the Rowan University Art Gallery, and Doug Martenson, an instructor at PAFA and exhibiting artist at the Gross McLeaf Gallery in Philadelphia. This show coincides with Philadelphia Art In the Open and Drawn to the Water, an exhibition at the Independence Seaport Museum.

Also on view are selected pieces by PAFA alumni Sam Clayton and Willow Bader, coinciding with the exhibition Cradle and Crucible, The Enduring Legacy of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts at the Avery Galleries in Bryn Mawr. Both artists have shown their work nationally.
