The National Quilt Museum presents The Nature of Design: Quilts by Cynthia Morgan and Velda Newman. On Exhibit June 8 to September 5.
How do quiltmakers respond to nature? How do they portray nature in their quilts? Two of the top quiltmakers today explore nature through their art.
“This exhibit is two very different looks at how nature inspires. Both have been quilters for a long time and have a very mature style,” said Judy Schwender, Curator and Registrar for the Museum. “Cynthia is here to deliver her quilts and is always eager to talk with people about her work.”
Morgan is a resident of the Sunshine Coast at Caloundra, north of Brisbane, Australia. She dyes her fabrics to achieve greater subtlety for her art quilts, and works in the ever changing sea colors. Morgan is known for her Rainforest, Australian Outback, and Flower series, as well as the Barrier Reef and Sea series.
Newman is an internationally recognized contemporary quilt artist, author and lecturer from Northern California. Known for her large scale, mostly organic designs, Newman’s work has appeared in many national and international exhibitions for the past 18 years and has been featured in over 30 publications. Newman will hold a quilting workshop at the Museum August 4 – 6 during the time her work is hanging.
