Toledo Museum of Art Closing Frank Stella: Irregular Polygons! Exhibition on July 24

The Toledo Museum of Art announce one week remains to see Frank Stella: Irregular Polygons! Since its opening last spring, this powerful exhibition has received praise from visitors from coast to coast.

“If ever a group of paintings embodied the truism that seeing authentic artworks in the flesh is far more powerful than seeing them in reproductions, it’s the Irregular Polygons of Frank Stella,” said the Cleveland Plain Dealer’s Steven Litt.

Each of the monumental compositions combines varying shapes to create daringly irregular outlines. The asymmetric canvases play with illusion, emphasizing his career-long exploration of space and volume. Although based on simple geometries, the Irregular Polygons comprise one of the most complex artistic statements of the artist’s career. TMA’s show is the first time all 11 compositions have been displayed in one room.

In 2010, President Barack Obama described him as “a legend for his accomplishments as one of the world’s most innovative painters and sculptors” when presenting him the National Medal of Arts.

The exhibition also features preparatory drawings, the 1974 print series Eccentric Polygons based on the Irregular Polygons, and materials for visitors to make their own polygons

Admission is free.
