Commanding Officer of Everett-based USS Nimitz aircraft carrier honored guest

SEATTLE – Media are invited to attend the July 22 VIP opening reception for The Museum of Flight’s new temporary exhibit, Soaring at Sea: 100 Years of Naval Aviation. The reception is from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. with light buffet and cash bar. Honored guest at the event is U.S. Navy Capt. Paul O. Monger, Commanding Officer of the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Nimitz. Those planning to attend the event, please RSVP the Museum’s Public Relations Office. The event is not open to the public.

Capt. Monger has over 3,100 flight hours in the F-14 Tomcat and over 850 arrested landings while deploying seven times to the Mediterranean, Indian Ocean, Arabian Gulf, and Western Pacific. His shore duty assignments include Personal Aide to the Secretary of the Navy (Jan. 1996-July 1997), National War College (Aug. 1997-June 1998) earning a Master’s Degree in National Security Strategy, CNO’s Executive Panel (Aug. 1998- May 1999), and Navy Nuclear Power Training (Aug. 2002 – May 2004).

The USS Nimitz is the lead ship in its class and also the benchmark for excellence in the Navy’s cadre of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers.  It is currently in drydock at Bremerton Naval Shipyard; its homeport is Everett.

The Exhibit
The Museum of Flight opens a new, temporary exhibit presenting an overview of the first 100 years of flight operations by the U.S. Navy. 2011 marks the centennial of Naval aviation, and this exhibit examines the events, people and machines that shaped the Navy’s legacy of flight. Soaring at Sea: 100 Years of Naval Aviation will include artifacts and pilot ephemera dating back to World War I, photographs and video presentations, with an emphasis on the long relationship between Naval aviation and the Pacific Northwest. The Blue Angels, Marine and Coast Guard aviation will also be covered.

Complimenting the exhibit will be special programs, films and fly-ins. Naval aviation is also well represented in the Museum’s permanent aircraft collection.

The Museum of Flight is located at 9404 E. Marginal Way S., Seattle, Exit 158 off Interstate 5 on Boeing Field half-way between downtown Seattle and Sea-Tac Airport. The Museum is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $16 for adults, $14 for seniors 65 and older, $13 for active military, $9 for youth 5 to 17, and free for children under 5.
