Portland Museum of Art Wins New England Museum Association (NEMA) Publication Design Awards

The Portland Museum of Art announce that it has won first place in the New England Museum Association (NEMA) 2011 Publication Award Competition in the “Exhibition Catalogues, Over $10” category for the catalogue Winslow Homer and the Poetics of Place. The catalogue was designed by Daniel Pepice and written by the Museum’s Chief Curator Thomas Denenberg in conjunction with exhibition of the same title that was on view at the Museum during the summer of 2010. The Museum also won joint third place in “Supplementary Materials” for the Circa 2010 exhibition materials.

“This award puts the Portland Museum of Art in very good company at the top ranks of our region’s institutions,” said NEMA Executive Director Dan Yaeger in announcing the honor. “Graphic communication is vital to connecting a museum with its community, so their success with publications reflects their success in their overall operations as well. The competition this year was especially intense with 206 publications from 64 museums entered in 16 different categories,” Yaeger said. Competition winners will be recognized and exhibited at the 93nd Annual NEMA Conference in Hartford, Connecticut, November 16 through 18, 2011.

For more than 90 years, the New England Museum Association has been the only organization in New England serving museums of all sizes and the people who work for and with them. NEMA’s mission is to strengthen member museums and museums in the region. To achieve this mission, NEMA fosters communication and ethical conduct, provides professional development, promotes excellence in museum operations, and encourages support for the museum community.
