Krannert Art Museum Celebrates 50 Years 1961-2011

The Krannert Art Museum celebrates 50 Years with an exhibition “At Fifty: Krannert Art Museum, 1961–2011” on view August 26 through October 23, 2011.

At Fifty marks Krannert Art Museum’s 50th Anniversary with an exhibition that celebrates the extraordinary range of KAM’s collection. In a unique, interactive architectural space, sculpture, painting, video, photography, decorative objects, and drawings will co-mingle. Objects from ancient Greece and Latin America will be featured in dialogue with nineteenth century European paintings and twentieth century video; realism will sit astride abstraction; photography and drawings will illustrate how artists have represented humanity for more than a century. The galleries will contain rotating walls and looping videos that create a dynamic synergy among works from different historical periods. Removing traditional hierarchies will allow the works to speak to each other and to viewers across time. A selection of artists includes: John Singleton Copley, Gustave Courbet, Walker Evans, Jasper Johns, Isoda Koryusai, Barbara Kruger, Edouard Manet, Mark Rothko, Ed Ruscha, Andy Warhol, Carrie Mae Weems, Edward Weston, and Frank Lloyd Wright.

Krannert Art Museum’s Golden Anniversary is an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate its wondrous history of gifts and purchases, exhibitions and festivals, and their publications and programs that have characterized this great institution.

The exhibition will celebrate Krannert Art Museum’s unique ability to offer visitors, students, and scholars an exposure to world cultures and artistic practices unparalleled in most academic and community settings.
